Thanks KML for your comments! I can appreciate what you have written, but I disagree with your last sentence. I do not think the issues we face in the current workforce will simply go away "when the last Baby Boomer dies" as you state. I do however think that much of "this is the way it has always been" tolerance will fade away by generational evolution. I think that a more peaceable recognition what change is needed, is rooted in the realization that Gen Xers want and expect more in the workplace which the reason for the change.

I find Boomers to be too arrogant to pass along any wisdom to Gen-Xers like myself.
When I entered the workforce after college ('93), the tech revolution was beginning and while we had to master all the programs, Boomers wore their ignorance and arrogance like a badge of honour. Now in my 40s, after toiling for years making Boomers look good Recently I have turned down opportunities for advancement. House is paid, investments doing good. Don't need the stress or the money. Have a young family and want to spend time with them. I think alot of companies are going to lose Xers sooner than they think. Our expectations weren't as grand as Boomers and we value our time and relationships more than money (unlike Boomers). Status means nothing to us. And remember, all the world's problems will be solved when the last Boomer finally dies.

Well said Kate. The values of saying please, and thank you in the workplace are often overlooked. Simply acknowledging someone that worked hard for you, is all the reward and recognition some employees need. A pat on the back, thanking them for their efforts goes a lot farther than some leaders realize.
